Liselore’s life and work with social media

, LEAP!/IBM, LEAP!

We all have new media and social media at our disposal. But how do they fit in the new way of working and communicating? IBM’s Liselore Ammerlaan-van Rijn shares a week in her life and work with new ways of communicating, their advantages and disadvantages.

Monday
What: Having an e-meeting with a colleague in the United States, supported by video conferencing.
Pros: I can visualise the person, and a face-to-face discussion is more dynamic and personal. Being able to see facial expressions helps with communication.
Cons: You can’t drink a cup of coffee together, so the social aspect is lessened. And conducting a meeting while sitting behind a computer takes a bit of getting used to.

Tuesday
What: Day at the office, having face-to-face meetings.
Pros: You can compliment someone during the meeting and be more personal. Cons: Because you’re at the office, there’s the tendency to plan too many meetings during the day and you overload yourself.

Wednesday

What: A combination day – at a customer meeting and at the office.

Pros: The customer had my information from the previous meeting in an online collaborative web environment, allowing him to share details online with other colleagues, who could provide feedback during the meeting. Efficient and constructive.

Cons: Stuck in a traffic jam! Slightly late, so I wasn’t able to pick the kids up from the crèche in time.

Thursday
What: Took the morning off as it was my son’s first day at school, and then worked from home.
Pros: I always go directly to my ‘social space’ to check what’s happening in my network, so I was able to keep up-to-date (in real time) with people communicating with me from work.
Cons: A lot of people feel overwhelmed by the number of ways they can now communicate, so I was helping colleagues navigate their way through the various options and explaining that it’s not so scary!

Friday
What: Working at the office. Facilitating with another colleague a Smart Work Foundation workshop in the morning, and after that doing some more work online in my communities, and writing a blog about new ways of performance measurement in the context of knowledge sharing.
Pros: You can re-use the same entry and post it in different contexts.
Cons: No cons!
