The Future of Finance Leadership

Mon 18 April 2011

, Ernst&Young, LEAP

How can aspiring Group CFOs ensure that they are well prepared to meet the future challenges of the role? These nine steps will bring them closer to their goal, reveals a recent study by Ernst & Young.

First, gain a breadth of finance experience. According to Ernst & Young’s survey respondents, it is more important for prospective candidates to gain experience in a wide range of roles within the finance function.

Second, develop commercial insight.
Sixty-seven percent of respondents believe that prospective CFOs who have spent their entire career in the finance function are at a disadvantage compared to those with direct commercial experience.

Third, seek out M&A experience.
Most leading CFOs interviewed for this report see M&A experience as a prerequisite to the role. Although deals have been few and far between during the financial crisis, the economic recovery should herald a return of M&A activity, giving future finance leaders a good opportunity to demonstrate their strategic and leadership skills.
