Many European countries have their own typical hotel accommodation. I guess we have all heard of the English ‘Bed & Breakfast’ concept, charming French ‘Gîtes’, ‘Chambre d’Hôtes’ en ‘Maison Particulier’, the famous ‘Castles’ in Scotland and Ireland, impressive Italian Palazzo’s and traditional Belgian ‘Convents and Monasteries’. Less people however, are familiar with the Paradores of Spain.
Spanish Paradores are luxury Parador hotels nested in ancient castles, Arab fortresses, monasteries, a sixteenth century palace and other historic buildings. They are often constructed in the style of the region and usually located on spectacular locations in areas of outstanding beauty. Imagine spending the night in a Spanish castle, looking down from your perch on a lone hilltop…….
Dozens of Paradores are spread over Spain and stretch from Galicia in the north west of Spain through Catalunya to Andalusia in the south of Spain. But you can also find them on the Canary Islands and in the Spanish cities in North Africa. Some Paradores are situated in cities, others in protected nature reserves or at beautiful waterfront settings.

Staying at a Parador is a destination in itself. This type of hotel offers history and fantasy, memories and inspiration. Imagination can become reality. You'll feel like royalty when you snuggle into an antique four-poster bed, glide down a sweeping, elegant staircase, or feast on a sumptuous dinner in a tapestry-hung dining room that was once a great knight's hall.
Paradores are government maintained hotels and are part of the Paradores de Turismo de Espana. They use quality tourism to act as guardian of the national and artistic heritage of Spain. It brings visitors to locations that might not otherwise be visited, keeps historical buildings from falling into disrepair, and helps keep culinary traditions alive.
Regardless of the Parador's age or style, all guests receive the high standards for which they are renowned. The rooms are comfortable, luxurious, very charming, nicely furnished with antiques and outfitted with the latest technology. Topped off with traditional and regional cuisine, local and national wines but also special gastronomic dishes served in elegant dining rooms. You might expect such facilities to only be available to those with maximum spending power, but this is absolutely not the case. While not exactly cheap, they are within the reach of those who really want to allow for such unique experiences.

Each Parador is a unique gem with a history of its own. There is no better way to enjoy Spain's charm, rich history, culture and wonderful cuisine, than to experience the Paradores of Spain.
