Shell and LEAPwomen Energy mix

LEAPwomen visited the Shell Technology Center and made her own Energy Scenario for the future. Enough clean energy is one of the key global issues for the next hundred years. The energy issue is complex and depends on many factors. This is shown once again by the recent developments in Japan and last year in the Gulf of Mexico. Shell wants to create more clarity in the energy issue and emphasize that we are going to need all energy-saving solutions to meet the increasing demand for energy requirements. With its Future Energy Platform - an initiative of Shell Netherlands - Shell wants to inspire and encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration.
During the well attended LEAP Energy Event at Shell last Thursday we listened to presentations by Helma Kip from Essent Local Energy Solutions and Jacqueline Redmond, VP Technology Strategy Shell who outlined the challenges ahead. Then we made our own LEAP Energy Scenario with the help of moderator Ewald Breunesse, Shell Energy Transitions Manager.
Our own mix
What do our energy needs in 2050 look like? And how much of what kind of energy do we need to meet those needs? And how sustainable is that? And how expensive? To answer these questions you must have a vision of developing the economy, the price movements of fossil fuels and renewable sources, the steps to take to make enough energy available (like importing gas and producing our 'own' biomass) and reducing CO2 greenhouse gas emissions. We discussed these multiple-choice questions and the answers led to a LEAP energy mix for the Netherlands. Quite a positive mix because our bio footprint is low and the CO2 Emissions are reduced by 70%, so we are well on our way to meet the international climate goals. But our plans and vision is quite expensive as well as it will cost around 80 billion Euro…. Will we able to pay for that? And will we find the agricultural land for all the biomass we need to grow to get more than 50% of our energy from renewable sources? These questions could fill many more meetings and we didn’t solve them during dinner. We hope Shell will come up with more inspiring questions and possible solutions in the near future.
Attendees said….
In any case the LEAPwomen who attended will pay attention to future developments. As Marjolein Groenendijk, Directeur KPN Consulting says: “Very interesting to get more inside knowledge on the different energy sources and their pros and cons. It was very inspiring to communicate with women from various continents in Dutch, English, French and sometimes bodylanguage, and to experience there can be likemindedness when dealing with global issues as this. I’m convinced that women make the difference in such discussions as they think differently. As Einstein already said: you cannot solve the problem from the same consciousness that created it….”
And Marie-Christine Vink, Senior Manager Ernst&Young summed it up:
‘Shell offered LEAP women last Thursday a strong programme. Content driven and instructive, sportive and through it’s theme very relevant. These kind of network meetings give me energy!”
