The Cannes film festival is your chance to mix and mingle with stars and the glitterati from across the globe on the picturesque Cote d'Azur. This year the 65th annual glamorous Film Festival takes place from May 16 to May 27. Films from around the world will be competing for the prestigious film award, the Palme d'Or. The crème de la crème of the jet set crowd shows up for the festivities, fine dining and red carpet events.
Cannes is the ‘star’ of the French Riviera, famous for the glitzy hotels, luxury shops, expensive cars, lovely beaches, yachts and cruise ships floating in blue water, amazing restaurants and the International Film Festival. The Film Festival was founded in 1946 and is the world’s most prestigious and publicized film festival. The invitation-only festival is held annually at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès with its endless ‘Allées des Stars’ with handprints and signatures of the famous. The Festival became popular thanks to the attendance of celebrities such as Kirk Douglas, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, Cary Grant, Romy Schneider, Alain Delon, Simone Signoret and Gina Lollobrigida.

The festival has become an important showcase for European films. It is a popular venue for film producers to launch their new films and sell their works to the distributors from all over the globe. Prior to the beginning of each event, the Festival's board of directors appoints the juries, chosen from a wide range of international artists, who hold sole responsibility for choosing which films will receive a Cannes award. The most prestigious award is the Golden Palm.

The Film Festival kicked off with the world premiere of the comedy Moonlight Kingdom from Wes Anderson on May 16th. Movie stars populate the coastal town. Actors like Brad Pitt for the thriller Killing Them Softly, Reese Witherspoon for the drama of Mud Jeff Nichols and Nicole Kidman for the thriller The Paperboy among others are competing for the Golden Palm. A total of 22 films make a chance to win.

The city of Cannes is centered around the old port, with the central part quite compact. The sandy beaches of La Croisette attract sun-worshippers and people-watchers, Rue d’Antibes is paradise for shopaholics and Cannes' Old Port seems to constantly expand to accommodate more cruise liners and yachts every year. Luxury hotels, famous brands and gastronomic restaurants add to the appeal of this city. I visited Cannes just before the start of the Film Festival for Charming Travel Choices and witnessed the preparations for the festival. Luxury tents were set up on the boulevard and the famous Nikki Beach takes up residence in two Cannes locations on La Croisette, featuring premiere parties, international renowned DJs, and gift lounges for the elite in the areas of media, fashion and film. Restaurants offer special menus and the city is covered with advertising billboards of the celebrities visiting the event. What a spectacle!! I can’t wait to hear which film wins the Golden Palm on Sunday 27th. of May 2012!!
