Positioning for the future, strategic thinking leaders, a bigger role for women and more room for social responsibility. These are some of the leadership trends BusinessWeek has spotted in its annual Best companies for leadership survey.

Future

The Top 20 companies in the survey have their eyes on the future, much more than other companies. They are innovating new strategies, tactics, and execution and are already working to gain a competitive advantage.

Strategic leaders

Strategic thinking is what the top companies indicate as the quality they most value in leaders. This shows, according to the survey, that companies are reviewing their options, rethinking their strategies, considering new opportunities and innovations. Last year, what the top 20 companies valued most was the ability of leaders to achieve results through others (execution).

Including women in decision-making

One of the most remarkable findings in the survey is that companies are recognising that women need to be represented at the highest levels of the decision-making process, not only because it is equitable, but also because it's important to gain women's insights in developing and marketing products and services, and it's important to attract and retain talented women.
